Understanding Thumb Sucking: A Guide for Parents

Thumb sucking is a common habit among babies and toddlers, with nearly half of two- and three-year-olds engaging in it. For many children, thumb sucking serves as a way to self-soothe, offering comfort when they’re tired, bored, or upset. It can even help them drift off to sleep more easily.

While most children naturally stop thumb sucking during their early years, parents may worry if the habit persists. This concern often leads to questions about its potential impact on dental health.

Let’s explore the effects of thumb sucking, how it compares to dummies, and what steps you can take to mitigate any dental issues.

Does Thumb Sucking Cause Orthodontic Problems?

Thumb sucking can lead to orthodontic issues, but it doesn’t guarantee that your child will face dental problems.

The risks associated with thumb sucking increase if the habit continues into the age when adult teeth start to emerge, typically around 6-7 years. At this stage, prolonged thumb sucking can result in:

Reduced growth of the lower jaw

Bucked teeth (upper front teeth flaring forward)

A constricted upper jaw, leading to crossbites

Crowding of lower front teeth or a backward tipping of these teeth

An open bite (where the front teeth don’t overlap)

Fortunately, most children outgrow thumb sucking before they develop their adult teeth, minimizing the chances of dental complications. However, it may be wise for parents to encourage their children to stop if they still suck their thumbs when they begin losing baby teeth.

Dummies vs. Thumb Sucking

Many parents opt to give their babies dummies to soothe them, particularly at bedtime or during moments of distress. While both dummies and thumb sucking can pose risks to dental health, some parents find dummies easier to manage and wean off. With a dummy, parents can gradually decrease usage, helping their child break the habit before adult teeth begin to emerge.

How Orthodontic Treatment Can Address Dental Problems from Thumb Sucking

If thumb sucking continues after a child has developed their adult teeth, it may cause those teeth to shift out of alignment or worsen existing issues. If your child is a thumb or digit-sucker, an orthodontic assessment around 7 years is recommended.

Orthodontists may suggest various strategies to help break the thumb-sucking habit, including:

Wearing a glove or mitten

Applying a bandage to the thumb

Using a bitter-tasting habit-breaking varnish

Fitting a thumb guard

A customised orthodontic thumb crib

An orthodontic thumb crib is a very effective measure to deter thumb sucking. However, your specialist orthodontist is likely to other the cheaper and less-invasive measures above first.

The longer the habit persists, the worse the effect of the teeth and jaws usually is. In severe cases, a combination of orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery is necessary to achieve a normal bite and jaw position. In most instances, however, braces or clear aligners can bring teeth back into alignment for a straighter, healthier smile. Many children who stopped sucking their thumbs early on often still need some orthodontic treatment for the correction of any persisting open bites, crookedness, buck teeth.

Both braces and aligners achieve great results, although they do so with slightly different methods. Your orthodontist will assess your child’s teeth, face, smile, and bite and advise what the best method(s) might be for them.

Braces use brackets attached to the teeth and a special wire to pull the teeth into place. They remain attached to the teeth until they are removed by an orthodontist.

Aligners are custom-made for the patient’s mouth, and are created as a series that will be worn one after the other to slowly move the teeth into place. They are much less noticeable during wear thanks to their clear design and can be taken out for meals and cleaning.

If you’re concerned about your child’s thumb sucking, consult a local Wellington Orthodontist. They can assess any dental issues and discuss potential treatments. Remember, the sooner the habit is addressed, the better the chance for teeth to return to their natural alignment. If they don’t, orthodontic treatment can effectively correct any problems. By understanding thumb sucking and its implications, you can better support your child’s dental health and overall well-being.

Navigating the journey to a confident smile during adolescence can be overwhelming.

At Thorndon Orthodontics, we’re here to simplify the process, offering teenagers the chance to unlock their brightest smiles with ease.

An Introduction to Braces for Teenagers

Orthodontic treatment during the teenage years is a common rite of passage, offering teenagers the opportunity to achieve a straighter, healthier smile.

Choosing the right type of braces for teenagers is not only about enhancing appearance but also about addressing dental issues such as misalignment and bite irregularities.

With advancements in orthodontic technology, teenagers now have a variety of braces options to choose from, ranging from traditional metal or ceramic braces to clear aligners.

Let’s explore the different types of braces available for teenagers, highlighting their features, benefits, and considerations to help your family make informed decisions about orthodontic care.

The Importance of Early Orthodontic Intervention

Early treatment of orthodontic issues is crucial for ensuring healthy dental development and preventing more severe problems later in life.

Here are some common orthodontic problems in teenagers:

Crowding: When there’s insufficient space for teeth to properly align, leading to overlapping or crooked teeth.

Habits: Persistent habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting can interfere with normal dental development and bite alignment.

Impacted Teeth: Teeth that fail to erupt properly, sometimes due to obstruction or lack of space in the jaw.

Trauma: Injuries to the mouth or face can result in misalignment of teeth or jaw irregularities.

Tooth Wear: Abnormal wear and tear on teeth due to misalignment or grinding habits, potentially leading to dental complications.

Constricted Upper Jaw: A narrow upper jaw can affect tooth alignment and breathing, requiring intervention to widen the arch.

Jaw Alignment: Misalignment of the upper and lower jaws, leading to issues like overbite, underbite, or crossbite.

Traditional Metal Braces: Time-Tested Orthodontic Solution

Traditional metal braces are one of the most common types of braces for teenagers due to their reliability and effectiveness.

Comprising metal brackets and wires, they exert gentle pressure over time to gradually shift teeth into alignment. While visible, their versatility make them a popular choice for teenagers who often like to add a splash of colours to their braces.

With regular adjustments, these braces correct various dental issues, providing teenagers with a straighter smile and improved oral health.

Despite advancements in orthodontic technology, traditional metal braces remain a trusted option, offering predictable results and a path to renewed confidence.

Exploring Ceramic Braces for Teenage Orthodontic Care

Ceramic braces are another type of braces for teenagers. They’re crafted with tooth-coloured ceramic, presenting a discreet alternative to traditional metal braces.

While slightly pricier ($400-$500 dearer than traditional braces), their inconspicuous appearance appeals to teenagers seeking a less noticeable orthodontic treatment option.

With ceramic braces, teens can embark on their journey to a straighter smile with confidence, knowing they can maintain their aesthetic appeal throughout the process.

Despite their subtlety, ceramic braces deliver reliable performance, aligning teeth effectively and enhancing dental health.

Clear Aligners: Invisible Orthodontic Treatment for Teens

Clear aligners, exemplified by SPARK, or Invisalign Teen, are transparent plastic trays custom-made to gradually shift teeth into alignment.

Unlike some other types of braces for teenagers, they’re virtually invisible, offering teenagers a discreet treatment option. With removable trays, teens can enjoy their favourite foods without restrictions and maintain optimal oral hygiene.

Additionally, clear aligners are comfortable and cause less irritation to the gums and cheeks compared to traditional braces.

Their convenience, aesthetics, and effectiveness make clear aligners a popular choice among teenagers seeking orthodontic treatment without the visibility of metal braces.

5-Step Plan for Managing Orthodontic Care for Teenagers

Choosing the right type of braces for teenagers is a significant decision, but with careful planning and management, it becomes a manageable and rewarding journey towards a confident and healthy smile.

Early Assessment: Schedule an orthodontic evaluation for your child by the age of 9 years old. Early detection allows orthodontists to identify potential issues and plan for timely intervention.

Consultation and Treatment Planning: Attend a consultation with an orthodontist to discuss treatment options tailored to your teenager’s needs. Consider factors such as treatment duration, cost, and type of braces.

Financial Planning: Explore payment options and insurance coverage to manage the cost of orthodontic treatment. Discuss flexible payment plans or financing options offered by orthodontic practices.

Treatment Monitoring: Attend regular appointments with the orthodontist to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments to the treatment plan. Encourage your teenager to follow orthodontic guidelines and practise good oral hygiene.

Retainer Maintenance: After braces are removed, ensure your teenager wears retainers as prescribed by the orthodontist to maintain the results of treatment. Schedule periodic check-ups to assess retainer fit and overall dental health.

By following this 5-step plan, families can effectively plan and manage orthodontic care for teenagers, ensuring a successful treatment outcome and a confident smile.

Every orthodontist understands the transformative power of a confident smile, especially for children.

As parents, you want the best for your child’s dental health and self-esteem. That’s why we’re dedicated to providing personalised care and guidance every step of the way.

Overview of Orthodontic Treatment for Children

Orthodontic treatment for children plays a vital role in promoting healthy dental development and correcting issues that may affect their oral health and overall well-being.

By addressing problems like misaligned teeth, bite irregularities, and jaw discrepancies at an early age, braces can help children achieve straighter smiles and improved function.

Additionally, orthodontic intervention during childhood can prevent more severe problems from developing later in life, ultimately reducing the need for extensive procedures in the future.

With the right treatment and guidance, orthodontic care sets children on the path to a lifetime of confidence and optimal dental health.

Early Orthodontic Evaluation: Setting the Foundation for Healthy Smiles

An early orthodontic evaluation is a crucial step in ensuring optimal dental health for children.

Here’s why:

Importance of Timing: Evaluating a child’s dental development by age 9 years allows orthodontists to detect potential issues early.

Preventive Approach: Early intervention can address emerging problems and prevent them from worsening over time.

Treatment Planning: Orthodontists can develop personalised treatment plans tailored to the child’s needs, promoting effective and timely correction.

Parental Guidance: Parents receive valuable information about their child’s dental health and guidance on proactive measures to maintain oral hygiene.

Early orthodontic evaluations set the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Signs that Braces May Be Needed: Recognising Early Indicators of Orthodontic Issues

Knowing the signs that braces may be necessary for your child’s dental health is essential.

Here are some indicators:

Crowding: Overlapping or crooked teeth that lack sufficient space.

Spacing: Gaps or irregular spacing between teeth.

Bite Irregularities: Overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite.

Jaw Discrepancies: Misalignment of the upper and lower jaws.

Early Loss of Baby Teeth: Premature loss of baby teeth can affect the alignment of permanent teeth.

Late Loss of Baby Teeth: Delayed loss of baby teeth can also effect the position of the erupting adult teeth. Late loss of baby teeth can also be an indicator or missing adult teeth.

Recognising these signs early allows for timely intervention and effective orthodontic treatment.

Age Considerations for Braces: Navigating the Optimal Time for Orthodontic Treatment

Understanding what age kids can get braces is key to ensuring successful treatment outcomes.

Here’s a general timeline:

Early Evaluation (Age 7): Orthodontic evaluation to assess dental development and detect potential issues.

Primary School Years (Ages 7-12): Early intervention for addressing emerging orthodontic problems. Often the age for Phase I treatment such as plates.

Adolescence (Ages 13-18): Most common age range for comprehensive orthodontic treatment with braces.

Late Teens/Young Adulthood: Orthodontic treatment may still be beneficial, but can sometimes take longer if there is no growth remaining.

Considering age factors helps determine the most appropriate timing for braces and maximises treatment benefits.

Benefits of Early Intervention: Promoting Healthy Dental Development in Children

Early orthodontic intervention offers numerous advantages for children’s dental health:

Preventing Progression: Addressing issues early prevents dental problems from worsening over time.

Reducing Treatment Complexity: Early intervention may shorten overall treatment time and reduce the need for extensive procedures in the future.

Improving Oral Function: Correcting bite irregularities enhances chewing function and speech development.

Boosting Confidence: A straighter smile from a young age promotes self-esteem and confidence in social settings.

Early intervention with braces sets children on the path to a lifetime of optimal dental health and self-assurance.

Exploring Orthodontic Options & Types of Braces for Children

When it comes to braces for children, several options are available to suit different needs and preferences:

Traditional Metal Braces: Reliable and durable, with metal brackets and wires.

Ceramic Braces: Tooth-coloured brackets for a more discreet appearance.

Clear Aligners (e.g., Invisalign, SPARK): Transparent plastic trays that are removable and nearly invisible.

Each type of braces offers unique benefits, allowing children to choose the option that best fits their lifestyle and orthodontic needs.

It’s natural to want to keep the beautiful smile you’ve worked so hard to achieve after months or years of orthodontic treatment. The process of ensuring that your teeth remain in their new position after your braces or aligners are removed is known as orthodontic retention. In this blog post, we’ll look at how to keep the results of your orthodontic treatment and avoid relapse.

Why is Orthodontic Retention Important?

Braces or aligners are used to gently move your teeth into the correct position during orthodontic treatment. When your braces or aligners are removed, your teeth will want to gradually shift back to their original position. This is referred to as relapse, and it has the potential to undo all of the hard work that you and your orthodontist have put in during your treatment.

Orthodontic retention is essential for keeping your teeth in their new position and preventing relapse. You can maintain the results of your treatment and enjoy a beautiful smile for years to come by wearing your retainers as directed by your orthodontist.

Types of Orthodontic Retainers

Orthodontic retainers are classified into two types: removable and fixed. Removable retainers, which are typically made of clear plastic, are intended to be worn at night – every night immediately after braces are removed and about twice a week after a year following treatment. Fixed retainers are small wires that are permanently bonded to the back of your front teeth – these are not visible but think of them like a seat belt, keeping safe and in position the teeth that are front and centre, that you’ll want to ensure remain straight!

At Thorndon Orthodontics, we will provide a retention strategy that best suits based on the pre-treatment position of teeth and your oral hygiene and gum condition. Most patients have a combination of fixed and removable retention. Very clear instructions are provided at the time that braces/aligners are removed to ensure that your retainers are most effective. It is critical that you follow these instructions for wearing and caring for the retainers – if you ever need reminding, or any maintenance of the retainers, we are only a phone call away.

Tips on Caring For Your Orthodontic Retainer

Here are some tips for keeping your orthodontic retainers in good condition and preventing relapse:

Wear your removable retainer according to your orthodontist’s instructions: usually this means wearing them to sleep every night for six months following treatment, alternate nights for another six month then down to once or twice a week. Indefinitely. You read that right! We know that teeth want to crowd and bunch throughout life so wearing a night-time retainer once or twice a week is a small price to pay to ensure your pearly whites stay straight well into adulthood!

Clean your retainers on a regular basis. Fixed retainers need some TLC when cleaning. You will need to take care to floss between these teeth and ensure that you see a hygienist regularly if you are prone to tartar build up. Removable retainers should be cleaned on a regular basis with a soft-bristled toothbrush. If there’s some build up or an odour, retainer cleaning solutions or tablets are available.

Keep your retainer in a safe place. Removable retainers should be stored in a protective case when not in use to avoid damage or loss. You’d be surprised how many retainers we replace every year because the family pooch found them! Keep retainers in a closed container out of reach of family pets and young children.

We will monitor your retainers for two years after your orthodontic treatment. Beyond this, we are always available to provide any assistance with maintaining or replacing retainers, especially if we provided your orthodontic treatment! If you have issues with retainers, it is best to have these seen to as soon as possible by a registered specialist orthodontist before the teeth have a chance to move out of line.

Getting braces can be an exciting and nerve-racking experience for many teenagers. While orthodontic treatment can help correct dental issues and improve oral health, it can also present a number of social and emotional challenges that can complicate the process.

In this blog post, we’ll look at some of the most common problems that teenagers face when getting braces and offer solutions.

Appearance

While most patients appreciate that orthodontic treatment will get them to the smile they want, not everyone is thrilled about wearing braces. Teenagers often feel self-conscious about their appearance and braces are not incognito. While the vast majority of patients embrace their braces, the colour choices and the fact that they are temporary, others take longer to get used to the appearance of them. In extreme cases, patients may feel self-conscious showing their teeth when the talk or smile as they are worried of negative comments or judgement.

If you’re a teen dealing with this issue, remember that braces are only temporary! Eyes on the prize champ – those metal or ceramic clips are your ticket to a smile you’re going to love to show off in the years to come.

Teasing

Teenagers sometimes worry that braces will make them a target of teasing. The truth is that so many teenagers now get orthodontic treatment that you’re hardly likely to be the odd one out for wearing braces. If you do encounter teasing, don’t forget to stay positive and shrug off any bad vibes on your way to that shiny straight white smile!

Talk to your orthodontist!

Finally, whether you are self-conscious about your crooked teeth before starting treatment or at the prospect of having visible braces, make sure you express your concerns to your parents and orthodontist – in many instances, alternate treatment options such as ceramic braces or clear aligners may be available to ease your concerns – we’re here to listen and want to help!

Our experienced orthodontist and friendly team are committed to providing a safe, welcoming and fun environment for you during your orthodontic treatment – we love getting to know our patients and seeing them thrive during and following their orthodontic treatment.

While you have braces, it’s important to take extra care to keep both the braces and your teeth and gums clean.

This helps to avoid not only plaque, staining and tartar building up on the teeth and round the brackets, but importantly it prevents early decay (or white spot lesions) forming around the braces or orthodontic appliances. This ensures that at the end of your orthodontic treatment, your teeth will be straight, white and healthy!

Here are the best products that will help you to keep your teeth and braces clean during orthodontic treatment.

A soft toothbrush or small head electric toothbrush

When it comes to keeping your braces and teeth clean, a soft manual toothbrush or small head electric toothbrush can work just as well as each other when used correctly.

A soft manual toothbrush is ideal to brush around each bracket and all over your teeth without aggravating your gums, which could be more sensitive than normal. A small head electric toothbrush is highly efficient at removing plaque from around your teeth and gums, just be sure to use it for the full two minutes to ensure you have enough time to clean all those hard-to-reach spots. When your braces are fitted, we will provide you with a soft manual toothbrush, especially designed for braces. If you need more during your treatment, they are available for sale at our reception.

Non-whitening fluoride toothpaste

As for which toothpaste to use, ensure you select a fluoridated toothpaste, which helps to keep your tooth enamel strong.

We recommend avoiding whitening toothpaste during orthodontic treatment because it may mean that you whiten only the parts of your teeth not covered by the metal brackets. When the brackets are eventually removed, it could mean having small discoloured areas in the centre of each tooth where the whitening toothpaste could not reach.

Dental floss

Even though you have braces on, it’s still important to try to floss between your teeth to avoid the damaging build-up of plaque and tartar and the gum irritation this can cause.

It will take longer and be a bit more tricky, as you will need to thread the floss through your braces in order to reach the teeth. However, this is a vital part of good oral hygiene throughout your treatment, so is well worth taking the extra care and time. Your orthodontist can recommend aids to help flossing such as Reach Access Flosser and Super Floss.

Interdental brushes

Interdental brushes are excellent for cleaning in between each bracket.

The stick design with 360-degree bristles allows you to reach into the small spaces between and around each bracket and properly clean the braces themselves and the teeth beneath them.

This is extra important as you’ll quickly notice that the space under the wire can trap food and quickly build small mountains of plaque – gross! It’s the trickiest spot to clear and near impossible to clean with a regular toothbrush alone.

Water flosser

A water flosser is a clever device that uses a concentrated stream of water to essentially water blast the hard to clean area around your braces.

It’s effective, comfortable, and easy to use, and while many people use water flossers without braces, those with braces may especially enjoy these perks. The water flosser makes it significantly faster and easier to effectively clean between the teeth, around braces, under the wire, etc.

While water flossers are more expensive than simple dental floss, they can save you a lot of time and hassle during orthodontic treatment. Additionally, if it means maintaining an excellent standard of oral hygiene and preventing decay, this is money well spent! The water flosser is also an excellent tool to clean around orthodontic retainer wires following treatment as well as around fillings and crowns so they are a great long-term investment.

Plaque disclosing tablets

Plaque disclosing tablets can be a handy tool in helping you to see areas around your teeth, gums, and braces that need extra attention when you brush and floss.

These simple chewable tablets will highlight any plaque in your mouth, usually in a bright purple, pink or blue hues to make it obvious which areas need more attention. They are completely safe, and can be hugely beneficial when it comes to self-assessing your brushing and flossing routine. If you have a child or teenager undergoing orthodontic treatment, this can be useful to help you and them check the thoroughness of their brushing.

One of many dental issues a patient can have is an overbite.

Interesting fact: what patients call an overbite (bucked teeth) actually differs from what orthodontists call an overbite (a deep bite). To avoid complicating things, this article refers to an overbite as what most people consider it to be – top teeth that stick out.

This relatively common problem can range from minor to severe, and it can lead to more dental issues further down the track, which is why orthodontics are often used to correct it.

Here’s a little more about what an overbite is, what causes an overbite, and how you can fix it.

What is an overbite?

An overbite is when your top front teeth extend out beyond your bottom front teeth. It is sometimes also known as ‘bucked teeth’, and is a type of malocclusion, which simply means that the teeth are not properly aligned.

It’s quite common to have a very slight overbite, but when the gap is large, it can lead to dental issues. This includes jaw pain, tooth wear, gum recession and gum disease. These can occur when the top teeth bite too far forward of the bottom teeth causing excessive wear and tear on certain teeth, often the lower and to a lesser extent the upper front teeth (incisors).

You might already know that you have an overbite, or you might start experiencing jaw pain and not know what’s causing it. Or, your dental professional might spot the overbite during a routine check-up or x-ray and suggest taking steps to better align your teeth.

What causes an overbite?

For many people, an overbite is simply genetic. In the same way that someone can have crooked or gapped teeth, they can also have an overbite. This might happen because of a relatively small lower jaw and/or flared upper teeth.

That said, there are some habits and issues that can create an overbite. These include thumb or digit sucking habits and tongue-thrusting, when the tongue presses forward in the mouth.

Regardless of the cause, your dental professional will likely suggest alignment to prevent future problems, or to deal with current dental problems and jaw pain.

How can you fix an overbite?

While surgery is an option to fix severe overbites, most overbites can be easily aligned with standard orthodontics.

Both traditional braces and clear aligners are designed to move teeth into place. Even though these orthodontic treatments are often used to straighten crooked teeth, they can also be used to pull prominent upper front teeth back to reduce or fully correct an overbite.

In minor cases, braces or aligners alone might do the job. Often, elastics (small rubber bands) are used to guide the teeth into the correct position, reducing an overbite and fixing the bite.

In more severe instances, extractions might be needed. This can provide the space needed to pull back particularly flared upper teeth.

In severe cases that result from a significantly small lower jaw, a combination of braces and surgery might be needed to completely correct the overbite. While this can sound intimidating, a combined treatment can cause a dramatic improvement not only in the teeth but also the facial profile and proportions.

The right treatment for you or your child – braces or aligners, extractions or no extractions; surgery or camouflage – will be determined by the specialist orthodontist at your consultation appointment. We will carefully explain various options, including costs, pros, and cons. Your personal preference, smile goals, and budget will also be taken into account when customising a treatment plan.

Call 04 595 5992 or contact us online to learn more about using orthodontics to correct an overbite, to make a booking, or to get started.

Proper oral hygiene should always be a top priority. When you’re wearing braces, that takes on a whole new meaning. You’re looking forward to having a straight smile once the braces come off. However, if you don’t take extra precautions during the process, you may end up with unsightly stains, white spots, or tooth decay when it’s all said and done. Let’s take a look at these oral hygiene tips to follow while wearing braces to ensure you enjoy that smile in the end.

Brushing

Brushing your teeth on a regular basis is not a novel concept. When you have braces, however, you must step up your routine. Food enjoys hiding in the nooks and crannies of braces. And failing to brush your teeth properly exposes them to the formation of white spots, tooth decay, and gum disease. Everything you don’t want to deal with once your braces are removed! Brush your teeth at least twice daily and remember, it might take longer to get them sparkly clean than it did before your braces went on. Because your toothbrush bristles are likely to wear out faster with braces, replace them on a regular basis. An electric and a water flosser (such as the Waterpik Cordless Select) are particularly good to maintain excellent oral hygiene around braces.

Introducing A New Type Of Tooth Brush

Adding an interdental brush to your routine will help you be even more diligent. It is a small brush that is typically used to clean between the teeth. It’s also great for brushing under the wire of braces and around the metal brackets. . The small bristles can reach around wires and brackets, getting into places that a regular toothbrush cannot. After brushing regularly, use an interdental brush to remove any plaque left behind around the braces. Take your time to ensure that you get in between every bracket and under both the upper and lower wires. Make an effort to be gentle. You don’t want to be overly aggressive and damage your braces or gums.

Eating Habits To Break

Unconscious habits that can damage braces are something that many people do not consider. Those who like to bite their nails or chew on the lid of a pen can unintentionally pop brackets off or bend wires. If you fall into this category, try to find other activities to keep your hands busy, such as fidget spinners. Biting into particularly hard or chewy food, for example, can cause damage to your braces and wires. Taking smaller bites, avoiding the “no-no” foods and eating with a knife and fork will all help keep this problem at bay.

Sports

If you enjoy sports, don’t worry – braces won’t hinder your season! For any contact sports, you should always wear a mouth guard including at training. Talk to your orthodontist about the best way to manage a mouthguard with braces. A good mouthguard after orthodontic treatment is a great way to protect your beautiful straight pearly whites.

It’s Worth It

There’s no denying that maintaining proper oral hygiene while wearing braces requires extra time and effort. However, having that perfect smile to enjoy once the braces are removed will make it all worthwhile in the end. Thorndon Orthodontics is here to give you a smile that you won’t want to hide. Make a simple appointment request to start your journey to the smile you’ve always wanted!

Everyone wants a healthy set of teeth and a straight white smile.

That’s where braces come in.

But while we all want the end result, most people (especially children) might dread the process of getting fitted and wearing braces.

To make the process as painless and easy as possible I’d like to take a moment to address misconceptions and demystify the process by letting you in on crucial information you should know before your Wellington braces appointment.

What To Know Before Your Wellington Braces Appointment

How Long Do I Need Braces For?

Invariably one of the first questions patients ask us is how long they need to wear their braces.

There is no magic number when it comes to braces.

On average patients that use fixed braces wear them for between 1-3 years. The amount of time depends on how misaligned one’s teeth are. However, this process may take longer if you’re using braces to treat severe problems with your bite.

If your teeth need only minor readjustment you may qualify to wear aligners. If so you’re in luck! Not only are aligners invisible, able to be taken out, and more comfortable, but they’re typically only worn for between 6-12 months.

While these are estimates, only your Wellington orthodontist will be able to give you a more accurate picture of how long you or your child will have to wear braces.

Do Braces Hurt?

Pain and hurt aren’t words we here at Thorndon Orthodontics associate with brace wearing. Slight discomfort and soreness are expected during the fitting process, just after getting fitted, and during tightening.

The idea that braces hurt comes from people’s anxiousness regarding medical and dental procedures. You might be surprised to learn that putting braces on is a gentle, delicate and precise procedure, you don’t even need numbing! We’ll take the time to assuage any fears you or your child might have and keep you informed every step of the way.

As a reminder, braces work by putting pressure on teeth as they slowly push and straighten them. While this may be uncomfortable for short periods of time, remind your child of the beautiful teeth they’ll have once the process is over.

To help manage discomfort, consider eating the following foods:

Frozen yoghurt

Ice cream

Smoothies

Soft fruit, like bananas and berries

Macaroni and cheese

Yoghurt

Soft breads

Cold drinks

Oatmeal

How Do I Make The Brace Fitting Process As Easy As Possible?

To ensure that your teeth are in the perfect condition for brace fitting you’ll need to help us out a little.

We highly recommend seeing your dentist for a check-up and a teeth cleaning before coming in for your braces appointment. We need teeth and gums healthy and looking their best for their big day.

Also, be sure to brush well in the days leading up to your appointment.

How Long Does It Take To Get Fitted For Wellington Braces?

That all depends on the severity of misalignment as well as the type of treatment you’re having. Usually, it takes between 30 and 60 minutes.

What’s Actually Happening In My Mouth?

It’s a good thing you’re asking this question now as opposed to when you’re being fitted for braces!

The most traditional and popular forms of braces are ceramic or metal. The process for fitting them involves cleaning and drying the teeth followed by securing the brackets to each tooth with the help of special bonding glue. A special light is used to set the glue and lastly, wires are put in and held in place by small colourful rubber bands (o-rings). O-rings are one of the most fun parts of orthodontic treatment and you can change your colours at every visit.

This process may be difficult to imagine, so here’s a brief video that details the process.

How Often Do Braces Need Adjustment?

For some reason, patients have this idea that braces require a lot of tinkering and that they’ll be spending every week at the orthodontist. While we love seeing the pearly white smiles of our patients, expect to make an appointment every 5-8 weeks. During these appointments, we’ll check in on the position of the teeth, make adjustments to braces or wires, and instruct on wearing rubber bands as we deem fit. These appointments usually take 5-15 minutes.

What Foods Should I Avoid Eating?

Braces are not indestructible. If mistreated, the integrity of your braces, as well as your teeth, can be put in jeopardy.

Luckily we’ve created a shortlist of foods to avoid while using braces. This shortlist also serves as a list of foods to be sure to indulge in before your fitting.

Let the feast begin!

Nuts

Gum

Hard candy

Hard bread

Chips

Crackers

Sugary drinks

If it’s high in sugar or takes a considerable amount of pressure to chew, it should probably be avoided. While this may seem bothersome, learning to live without these foods will help you build healthy dietary habits that will benefit your teeth and gum health long after the braces come off.

Should I Wear A Mouthguard?

Since we’re on the topic of braces protection, we’d be remiss not to talk about the usefulness of mouthguards.

Many of our younger patients are athletes. We don’t want them to feel like their braces are preventing them from giving it their all in their field of choice.

That’s why we strongly encourage the use of mouthguards.

Is It Odd For Adults To Get Braces in Wellington?

Of course not!

You’re never too late to improve the quality of your teeth, fix an abnormal bite, or perfect that smile.

The process may take a little longer but despite having fully grown teeth, adults can still receive braces. Years ago, braces for adults may have been unusual but now, it’s increasingly common with more adults getting orthodontic treatment than ever!

Though treatment can take a little longer for adults, age is just a number so don’t let it get in the way of making your smile a 10!

With advances in aligners as well, there are more options and possibilities than ever before.

Getting your braces can be a scary process. We’ve found that addressing concerns before your visit will help mitigate any fear you or your child may have.

If you have any questions or would like to book an appointment, just give us a call.

A lot of kids and even some adults can feel anxious about attending an initial assessment. Knowing what to expect can help prepare you for the appointment and eliminate any anxiety.

Before the appointment

If you have had a referral and/or any relevant x-rays (a panoramic, head film or CBCT) taken by another dentist or specialist please send it to our office before your consultation so we have time to view this imaging. If there is a referral, please send this to us. We will take the time to review any imaging and information you can provide us before your appointment. You will be sent a new patient form to complete and return to us prior to your appointment. This information is really useful to us to allow us to treat our patients safely.

Arriving For Your Appointment

Our clinic can be found in Classic House (Intelecta Centre) at 15 Murphy Street. On arrival, you will be greeted by our friendly receptionist. While you’re waiting for your appointment, you can enjoy the lovely city and harbour views from our waiting room. The consultation usually takes about 15-20 minutes.

The Appointment

A panoramic x-ray is taken to assess the development of all the teeth and screen for any anomalies. The orthodontist (Divya) will meet and greet you. We will ask you about any concerns that you, or your dentist or oral health therapist have about your teeth. Your orthodontist will assess your face, profile, jaw function, your teeth, your bite, and smile. All this helps to work out if there are any orthodontic problems and, if so when they might need to be addressed.

There Is Usually One Of Two Outcomes After The Initial Consultation.

Ready for orthodontic treatment – this means that there are problems that can be helped with orthodontic treatment and the timing for treatment is appropriate.. Before any orthodontic treatment is commenced, records will be taken (this may occur as a second appointment) and you will be provided with a comprehensive treatment plan that outlines the orthodontic treatment, cost, estimated duration, and any risks or special considerations.

Not yet ready for treatment – This might be because your child is still growing or developing, we might be waiting on more adult teeth to come through, or in some instances, an appointment may be needed with a dentist or another specialist before we can start treatment. If not ready for treatment, your orthodontist will advise what the appropriate timeframe is for a review. A review appointment (which is very similar to consultation) is usually scheduled for 6-12 months. We don’t charge for review appointments unless an x-ray needs to be repeated.

So now you know exactly what to expect at the orthodontic consultation!

Please feel free to contact our office to book an appointment.
