Understanding Thumb Sucking: A Guide for Parents

Thumb sucking is a common habit among babies and toddlers, with nearly half of two- and three-year-olds engaging in it. For many children, thumb sucking serves as a way to self-soothe, offering comfort when they’re tired, bored, or upset. It can even help them drift off to sleep more easily.

While most children naturally stop thumb sucking during their early years, parents may worry if the habit persists. This concern often leads to questions about its potential impact on dental health.

Let’s explore the effects of thumb sucking, how it compares to dummies, and what steps you can take to mitigate any dental issues.

Does Thumb Sucking Cause Orthodontic Problems?

Thumb sucking can lead to orthodontic issues, but it doesn’t guarantee that your child will face dental problems.

The risks associated with thumb sucking increase if the habit continues into the age when adult teeth start to emerge, typically around 6-7 years. At this stage, prolonged thumb sucking can result in:

Reduced growth of the lower jaw

Bucked teeth (upper front teeth flaring forward)

A constricted upper jaw, leading to crossbites

Crowding of lower front teeth or a backward tipping of these teeth

An open bite (where the front teeth don’t overlap)

Fortunately, most children outgrow thumb sucking before they develop their adult teeth, minimizing the chances of dental complications. However, it may be wise for parents to encourage their children to stop if they still suck their thumbs when they begin losing baby teeth.

Dummies vs. Thumb Sucking

Many parents opt to give their babies dummies to soothe them, particularly at bedtime or during moments of distress. While both dummies and thumb sucking can pose risks to dental health, some parents find dummies easier to manage and wean off. With a dummy, parents can gradually decrease usage, helping their child break the habit before adult teeth begin to emerge.

How Orthodontic Treatment Can Address Dental Problems from Thumb Sucking

If thumb sucking continues after a child has developed their adult teeth, it may cause those teeth to shift out of alignment or worsen existing issues. If your child is a thumb or digit-sucker, an orthodontic assessment around 7 years is recommended.

Orthodontists may suggest various strategies to help break the thumb-sucking habit, including:

Wearing a glove or mitten

Applying a bandage to the thumb

Using a bitter-tasting habit-breaking varnish

Fitting a thumb guard

A customised orthodontic thumb crib

An orthodontic thumb crib is a very effective measure to deter thumb sucking. However, your specialist orthodontist is likely to other the cheaper and less-invasive measures above first.

The longer the habit persists, the worse the effect of the teeth and jaws usually is. In severe cases, a combination of orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery is necessary to achieve a normal bite and jaw position. In most instances, however, braces or clear aligners can bring teeth back into alignment for a straighter, healthier smile. Many children who stopped sucking their thumbs early on often still need some orthodontic treatment for the correction of any persisting open bites, crookedness, buck teeth.

Both braces and aligners achieve great results, although they do so with slightly different methods. Your orthodontist will assess your child’s teeth, face, smile, and bite and advise what the best method(s) might be for them.

Braces use brackets attached to the teeth and a special wire to pull the teeth into place. They remain attached to the teeth until they are removed by an orthodontist.

Aligners are custom-made for the patient’s mouth, and are created as a series that will be worn one after the other to slowly move the teeth into place. They are much less noticeable during wear thanks to their clear design and can be taken out for meals and cleaning.

If you’re concerned about your child’s thumb sucking, consult a local Wellington Orthodontist. They can assess any dental issues and discuss potential treatments. Remember, the sooner the habit is addressed, the better the chance for teeth to return to their natural alignment. If they don’t, orthodontic treatment can effectively correct any problems. By understanding thumb sucking and its implications, you can better support your child’s dental health and overall well-being.

If you’re dealing with significant bite or jaw alignment issues, your Wellington orthodontist may recommend a combination of braces and orthognathic (jaw) surgery to achieve the best possible results for you. This comprehensive treatment approach can address a wide range of severe concerns, from an overbite or underbite, deep bite or open, to TMJ disorders and sleep apnea.

What is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery, or corrective jaw surgery, is a procedure performed by an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon to correct severe bite or jaw alignment problems that can’t be fully addressed with braces alone.

The goal of orthognathic surgery is to reposition the jaws, and teeth, into a more optimal alignment, improving both the function and appearance of the bite.

Common conditions treated with jaw surgery braces include:

Overjet (upper jaw protrudes too far forward)

Underbite (lower jaw protrudes too far forward)

Crossbite (upper jaw too narrow)

Open bite (vertical gap between top and bottom teeth)

Asymmetric or uneven jaw growth

Gummy smile

Obstructive sleep apnea

The Orthodontic Surgical Approach

Patients undergoing orthognathic surgery braces will typically wear braces before and after the surgical procedure. Braces play a crucial role in both the pre-surgical and post-surgical phases of treatment.

Pre-surgical orthodontics for orthognathic surgery: Before having jaw surgery, your orthodontist will fit braces to align the teeth as much as possible to ensure the jaw(s) can be moved to the right position and that the teeth fit well at the time of the jaw surgery. This preliminary orthodontic work helps ensure the best possible outcome from the surgery itself and usually takes anywhere from 9 to 24 months, depending on the position of the teeth prior to commencing treatment.

Post-surgical orthodontics for orthognathic surgery: Immediately after the surgery, the braces are used as anchors for the use of rubber bands which act like a splint to prevent too much movement of the jaws during the first weeks of healing. After this, the braces are used to fine-tune the position of the teeth to achieve the best and smile and bite possible. This phase typically lasts 6-12 months.

The combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery allows the orthodontist and oral surgeon to work together to achieve dramatic improvements in facial balance, jaw function, and overall dental/oral health.

Is Jaw Surgery Right for You?

Not everyone with bite or jaw alignment issues will need surgery. Your orthodontist will carefully evaluate the severity of your condition and determine the best course of treatment. Mild to moderate problems can often be addressed with braces alone.

However, if you have significant skeletal discrepancies, jaw surgery may be recommended to achieve your optimal results. Your orthodontist and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon will work closely together to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your individual needs. With the right treatment approach, you can achieve a beautiful smile and functional bite that will last a lifetime.

Finding the right orthodontist to assist with braces and jaw surgery

Due to the complexity of orthodontic preparation for jaw surgery, we recommend finding an experienced specialist orthodontist in Wellington. At Thorndon Orthodontics, our specialist orthodontists are passionate about and experienced in treating surgical cases not only in private practice but also at the regional hospital as part of the multidisciplinary cleft and craniofacial team. We work closely with Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and can guide you through your brace and jaw surgery journey.

Are you curious about what an orthodontist does and how to prepare for your first visit?

Wondering how orthodontic treatment can transform your oral health?

This article explores the world of orthodontics and answers all the questions you may have before your initial appointment.

Join us as we explore the benefits of partnering with an expert orthodontist to enhance your well-being and create a beautiful smile.

Introduction to Orthodontics: Everything You Need To Know

“What is an orthodontist?” This question often arises when discussing dental care.

Orthodontics is a specialised field within dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental irregularities, particularly those related to misaligned teeth and jaws.

Orthodontists are highly trained dental professionals who specialise in correcting these issues to improve both the function and aesthetics of your smile.

They employ various treatments such as braces, clear aligners, and retainers to straighten teeth, correct bites, and enhance oral health.

Let’s delve deeper into what orthodontists do, their role in dental care, and answer any questions you may have before your initial visit.

What Do Orthodontists Do?

Orthodontists play a crucial role in dental care, specialising in correcting dental irregularities and improving smiles.

Here’s a breakdown of orthodontists and what they do:

Diagnose & Assess: Orthodontists check for dental irregularities, such as misaligned teeth and jaws.

Treatment Plans: Create personalised plans tailored to each patient’s needs.

Orthodontic Treatments: Orthodontists utilise approaches like braces and clear aligners to straighten teeth and correct bites.

Monitor Your Progress: Orthodontists partner with you throughout your treatment journey.

Educate and Guidance: Orthodontists provide support with proper oral hygiene practices during treatment and beyond.

Collaborate With Other Dental Professionals: This ensures comprehensive and ongoing care for all patients.

What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

Dentists and orthodontists both play crucial roles in dental care, but their focuses and expertise differ.

Dentists primarily focus on general oral health, including routine check-ups, cleanings, and treating dental issues like cavities and gum disease.

On the other hand, orthodontists specialise in diagnosing and treating misalignments of the teeth and jaws. They use treatments such as braces and clear aligners to straighten teeth and correct bites.

While dentists provide comprehensive dental care, orthodontists specialise in orthodontic treatment for alignment issues.

What are Some Common Types of Orthodontic Treatments?

Orthodontic treatments offer solutions for various dental irregularities, catering to patients’ unique needs.

Here’s an overview of the different types of orthodontic treatments available:

Braces: Traditional braces consist of metal brackets and wires that gradually and effectively straighten your teeth.

Clear Aligners: These transparent trays, such as Spark, Invisalign, offer a discreet alternative to braces.Retainers: After orthodontic treatment, retainers help maintain the alignment of teeth.

Functional Appliances: Devices like headgear or palate expanders address jaw alignment issues.

Lingual Braces: Placed behind the teeth, lingual braces offer a more discreet option compared to traditional braces.

Surgical Orthodontics: In complex cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct severe jaw misalignments.

What do orthodontists do on the first visit?

The orthodontic consultation process begins with a comprehensive assessment of your face, teeth, bite, smile and, in particular, any concerns you have.

During the first visits, orthodontists conduct a thorough examination, which may include x-rays, photographs, and scans of your teeth.

They discuss your treatment goals and preferences, explaining the various orthodontic options available.

Orthodontists also address any questions or concerns you may have, ensuring you feel informed and comfortable with the proposed treatment plan.

By the end of the initial visit, you’ll have a clear understanding of your orthodontic needs and the next steps in your treatment journey.

What are the Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment offers numerous advantages beyond just improving the appearance of the smile.

Here are some key benefits:

Enhanced Aesthetics: Straighter teeth and a properly aligned bite can significantly improve the appearance of the smile.

Improved Oral Health: Orthodontic treatment can make it easier to clean teeth effectively, reducing the risk of gum disease, cavities, and other oral health issues.

Better Bite Function: Correcting misaligned bites can improve chewing and comfort, improve speech, as well as alleviate jaw pain or discomfort in some instances.

Increased Confidence: A beautiful smile can boost self-esteem and confidence, leading to improved social and professional interactions.

Long-Term Oral Stability: Properly aligned teeth are less prone to wear and tear, reducing the risk of dental problems in the future.

Preventive Care: Early orthodontic intervention can address potential issues before they worsen, reducing the need for more extensive treatment later in life.

Dreaming of fixing your teeth but unsure where to start? No problem, this is the article for you!

Here, we explore the best teeth straightening methods and how to ensure you receive the care and support you need.

Let’s explore together and find the perfect solution to transform your smile.

An Introduction to Teeth Straightening

Achieving a beautifully aligned smile is a common goal for many, and with advancements in orthodontic technology, numerous teeth straightening methods are available.

From traditional braces to clear aligners like SPARK and Invisalign, finding the best teeth straightening method tailored to individual needs has never been easier.

In this helpful guide, we’ll explore five of the best teeth straightening methods, their benefits, and considerations to help you make an informed decision about your orthodontic journey.

Whether you’re seeking traditional or more discreet options, understanding teeth straightening methods is the first step toward achieving the smile of your dreams.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces remain a reliable and effective teeth straightening method, trusted by orthodontists for decades.

Comprising metal brackets and wires, they exert gentle pressure to gradually shift teeth into proper alignment.

Despite advancements in orthodontic technology, traditional braces remain popular due to their versatility in treating various dental issues.

From simple misalignments to complex cases, traditional braces offer consistent results and are often the preferred choice for patients seeking comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners, such as SPARK and Invisalign, have revolutionised teeth straightening with their discreet, removable design.

Crafted from transparent plastic, they gradually shift teeth into alignment without the need for visible brackets or wires.

This innovative method offers greater comfort and convenience, allowing users to remove aligners for eating and oral hygiene.

Clear aligners are highly popular among adults and teens seeking a subtle orthodontic solution.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces offer a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional metal braces by blending in with the natural tooth colour.

They consist of clear or tooth-coloured brackets and wires, making them less noticeable. Despite their discreet appearance, ceramic braces effectively straighten teeth using the same mechanism as traditional braces.

They are popular among individuals, especially adults, seeking a subtle orthodontic treatment option without compromising on effectiveness.

How To Choosing the Best Teeth Straightening Methods

Selecting the appropriate teeth straightening method is crucial for achieving optimal results. Consider the following factors when choosing the right method for you:

Orthodontic Needs: Evaluate the severity of your dental issues and any specific concerns you have.

Treatment Goals: Determine your desired outcome and whether you prioritise aesthetics, comfort, or treatment duration.

Lifestyle Factors: Consider factors such as diet, oral hygiene routine, and social/professional obligations.

Budget & Insurance: Assess your financial situation and inquire about insurance coverage for orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontist’s Recommendation: Consult with an orthodontist to discuss your options and receive personalised advice.

By carefully considering these factors, you can make an informed decision and straighten your teeth with the best method for your needs.

With careful planning and the guidance of the right orthodontist, investing in your child’s smile is not only affordable but also invaluable.

This article outlines the cost of braces for teens and kids, showing how much you can expect to pay and the benefits this treatment brings.

Discover how braces for kids can be a worthwhile investment in their future confidence and oral health.

Overview of Braces for Kids

Orthodontic treatment plays a crucial role in the dental health and overall well-being of children and teenagers.

Braces for kids are specially designed to address common dental issues such as misalignment, overcrowding, and bite irregularities during their formative years.

By correcting these issues early on, braces not only enhance the appearance of a child’s smile but also promote proper oral function and prevent future dental problems.

How Much Do Braces Cost for Kids?

When it comes to orthodontic treatment for children, various types of braces are available, each with its own unique features and costs. Let’s explore the different options and their average costs:

Traditional Metal Braces

Average Cost: $4,000 – $9,900

Metal brackets and wires provide effective and durable treatment for common dental issues.

Ceramic Braces

Usually cost about $400-500 more than traditional metal braces

Tooth-coloured or ceramic brackets offer a more discreet option for children concerned about the appearance of metal braces.

Clear Aligners (e.g., Invisalign Teen, SPARK)

Average Cost: $9,000-11,000

Removable plastic aligners provide a nearly invisible option for teens, ideal for those with mild to moderate alignment issues.

Exploring the Factors Affecting the Cost of Braces For Teens & Kids

Several factors influence the cost of braces for kids, making it essential for parents to understand the variables involved.

Treatment complexity plays a significant role, as more severe orthodontic issues may require longer treatment times and additional adjustments.

The type of braces chosen also affects the overall cost, with options like ceramic braces or clear aligners typically being more expensive than traditional metal braces.

Additionally, geographic location can influence prices. Orthodontic fees vary slightly from city to city. Generally, orthodontic treatment is slightly more expensive in major centres.

By considering these factors, parents can better anticipate and budget for their child’s orthodontic treatment.

Understanding Initial Consultation Fees

Before embarking on orthodontic treatment, children undergo an initial consultation with an orthodontist, which incurs a fee.

This fee covers the orthodontist’s time spent assessing the child’s dental health, discussing treatment options, and developing a personalised plan. Initial consultation fees typically range from $100 to $300 in Wellington.

The consultation serves as an invaluable opportunity to gain insight into the child’s orthodontic needs and make informed decisions about their dental care.

Timelines of Treatment and Overall Costs

The timeline for braces treatment for kids varies depending on factors such as the severity of misalignment and the chosen treatment method.

Most treatments last 1 to 2 years. However, treatment duration may be shorter or longer based on individual circumstances.

To make treatment more accessible, most practices in NZ will offer in-house interest-free payment options. Orthodontic treatment is a worthwhile investment due to the long-term benefits of a confident smile and improved dental health making it a worthwhile endeavour for parents and children alike.

The Lifetime Value of Early Intervention

Early orthodontic intervention for kids offers numerous benefits beyond aesthetic improvements.

Correcting dental issues during childhood can prevent more severe problems from developing later in life, such as jaw misalignment and tooth decay.

Additionally, addressing orthodontic concerns early can improve speech development, chewing function, and overall oral health.

By investing in braces for kids, parents not only enhance their child’s smile but also set them on a path towards lifelong dental wellness and self-confidence.

The value of early intervention extends far beyond the cost, providing priceless benefits that last a lifetime.

Navigating the journey to a confident smile during adolescence can be overwhelming.

At Thorndon Orthodontics, we’re here to simplify the process, offering teenagers the chance to unlock their brightest smiles with ease.

An Introduction to Braces for Teenagers

Orthodontic treatment during the teenage years is a common rite of passage, offering teenagers the opportunity to achieve a straighter, healthier smile.

Choosing the right type of braces for teenagers is not only about enhancing appearance but also about addressing dental issues such as misalignment and bite irregularities.

With advancements in orthodontic technology, teenagers now have a variety of braces options to choose from, ranging from traditional metal or ceramic braces to clear aligners.

Let’s explore the different types of braces available for teenagers, highlighting their features, benefits, and considerations to help your family make informed decisions about orthodontic care.

The Importance of Early Orthodontic Intervention

Early treatment of orthodontic issues is crucial for ensuring healthy dental development and preventing more severe problems later in life.

Here are some common orthodontic problems in teenagers:

Crowding: When there’s insufficient space for teeth to properly align, leading to overlapping or crooked teeth.

Habits: Persistent habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting can interfere with normal dental development and bite alignment.

Impacted Teeth: Teeth that fail to erupt properly, sometimes due to obstruction or lack of space in the jaw.

Trauma: Injuries to the mouth or face can result in misalignment of teeth or jaw irregularities.

Tooth Wear: Abnormal wear and tear on teeth due to misalignment or grinding habits, potentially leading to dental complications.

Constricted Upper Jaw: A narrow upper jaw can affect tooth alignment and breathing, requiring intervention to widen the arch.

Jaw Alignment: Misalignment of the upper and lower jaws, leading to issues like overbite, underbite, or crossbite.

Traditional Metal Braces: Time-Tested Orthodontic Solution

Traditional metal braces are one of the most common types of braces for teenagers due to their reliability and effectiveness.

Comprising metal brackets and wires, they exert gentle pressure over time to gradually shift teeth into alignment. While visible, their versatility make them a popular choice for teenagers who often like to add a splash of colours to their braces.

With regular adjustments, these braces correct various dental issues, providing teenagers with a straighter smile and improved oral health.

Despite advancements in orthodontic technology, traditional metal braces remain a trusted option, offering predictable results and a path to renewed confidence.

Exploring Ceramic Braces for Teenage Orthodontic Care

Ceramic braces are another type of braces for teenagers. They’re crafted with tooth-coloured ceramic, presenting a discreet alternative to traditional metal braces.

While slightly pricier ($400-$500 dearer than traditional braces), their inconspicuous appearance appeals to teenagers seeking a less noticeable orthodontic treatment option.

With ceramic braces, teens can embark on their journey to a straighter smile with confidence, knowing they can maintain their aesthetic appeal throughout the process.

Despite their subtlety, ceramic braces deliver reliable performance, aligning teeth effectively and enhancing dental health.

Clear Aligners: Invisible Orthodontic Treatment for Teens

Clear aligners, exemplified by SPARK, or Invisalign Teen, are transparent plastic trays custom-made to gradually shift teeth into alignment.

Unlike some other types of braces for teenagers, they’re virtually invisible, offering teenagers a discreet treatment option. With removable trays, teens can enjoy their favourite foods without restrictions and maintain optimal oral hygiene.

Additionally, clear aligners are comfortable and cause less irritation to the gums and cheeks compared to traditional braces.

Their convenience, aesthetics, and effectiveness make clear aligners a popular choice among teenagers seeking orthodontic treatment without the visibility of metal braces.

5-Step Plan for Managing Orthodontic Care for Teenagers

Choosing the right type of braces for teenagers is a significant decision, but with careful planning and management, it becomes a manageable and rewarding journey towards a confident and healthy smile.

Early Assessment: Schedule an orthodontic evaluation for your child by the age of 9 years old. Early detection allows orthodontists to identify potential issues and plan for timely intervention.

Consultation and Treatment Planning: Attend a consultation with an orthodontist to discuss treatment options tailored to your teenager’s needs. Consider factors such as treatment duration, cost, and type of braces.

Financial Planning: Explore payment options and insurance coverage to manage the cost of orthodontic treatment. Discuss flexible payment plans or financing options offered by orthodontic practices.

Treatment Monitoring: Attend regular appointments with the orthodontist to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments to the treatment plan. Encourage your teenager to follow orthodontic guidelines and practise good oral hygiene.

Retainer Maintenance: After braces are removed, ensure your teenager wears retainers as prescribed by the orthodontist to maintain the results of treatment. Schedule periodic check-ups to assess retainer fit and overall dental health.

By following this 5-step plan, families can effectively plan and manage orthodontic care for teenagers, ensuring a successful treatment outcome and a confident smile.

Every orthodontist understands the transformative power of a confident smile, especially for children.

As parents, you want the best for your child’s dental health and self-esteem. That’s why we’re dedicated to providing personalised care and guidance every step of the way.

Overview of Orthodontic Treatment for Children

Orthodontic treatment for children plays a vital role in promoting healthy dental development and correcting issues that may affect their oral health and overall well-being.

By addressing problems like misaligned teeth, bite irregularities, and jaw discrepancies at an early age, braces can help children achieve straighter smiles and improved function.

Additionally, orthodontic intervention during childhood can prevent more severe problems from developing later in life, ultimately reducing the need for extensive procedures in the future.

With the right treatment and guidance, orthodontic care sets children on the path to a lifetime of confidence and optimal dental health.

Early Orthodontic Evaluation: Setting the Foundation for Healthy Smiles

An early orthodontic evaluation is a crucial step in ensuring optimal dental health for children.

Here’s why:

Importance of Timing: Evaluating a child’s dental development by age 9 years allows orthodontists to detect potential issues early.

Preventive Approach: Early intervention can address emerging problems and prevent them from worsening over time.

Treatment Planning: Orthodontists can develop personalised treatment plans tailored to the child’s needs, promoting effective and timely correction.

Parental Guidance: Parents receive valuable information about their child’s dental health and guidance on proactive measures to maintain oral hygiene.

Early orthodontic evaluations set the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Signs that Braces May Be Needed: Recognising Early Indicators of Orthodontic Issues

Knowing the signs that braces may be necessary for your child’s dental health is essential.

Here are some indicators:

Crowding: Overlapping or crooked teeth that lack sufficient space.

Spacing: Gaps or irregular spacing between teeth.

Bite Irregularities: Overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite.

Jaw Discrepancies: Misalignment of the upper and lower jaws.

Early Loss of Baby Teeth: Premature loss of baby teeth can affect the alignment of permanent teeth.

Late Loss of Baby Teeth: Delayed loss of baby teeth can also effect the position of the erupting adult teeth. Late loss of baby teeth can also be an indicator or missing adult teeth.

Recognising these signs early allows for timely intervention and effective orthodontic treatment.

Age Considerations for Braces: Navigating the Optimal Time for Orthodontic Treatment

Understanding what age kids can get braces is key to ensuring successful treatment outcomes.

Here’s a general timeline:

Early Evaluation (Age 7): Orthodontic evaluation to assess dental development and detect potential issues.

Primary School Years (Ages 7-12): Early intervention for addressing emerging orthodontic problems. Often the age for Phase I treatment such as plates.

Adolescence (Ages 13-18): Most common age range for comprehensive orthodontic treatment with braces.

Late Teens/Young Adulthood: Orthodontic treatment may still be beneficial, but can sometimes take longer if there is no growth remaining.

Considering age factors helps determine the most appropriate timing for braces and maximises treatment benefits.

Benefits of Early Intervention: Promoting Healthy Dental Development in Children

Early orthodontic intervention offers numerous advantages for children’s dental health:

Preventing Progression: Addressing issues early prevents dental problems from worsening over time.

Reducing Treatment Complexity: Early intervention may shorten overall treatment time and reduce the need for extensive procedures in the future.

Improving Oral Function: Correcting bite irregularities enhances chewing function and speech development.

Boosting Confidence: A straighter smile from a young age promotes self-esteem and confidence in social settings.

Early intervention with braces sets children on the path to a lifetime of optimal dental health and self-assurance.

Exploring Orthodontic Options & Types of Braces for Children

When it comes to braces for children, several options are available to suit different needs and preferences:

Traditional Metal Braces: Reliable and durable, with metal brackets and wires.

Ceramic Braces: Tooth-coloured brackets for a more discreet appearance.

Clear Aligners (e.g., Invisalign, SPARK): Transparent plastic trays that are removable and nearly invisible.

Each type of braces offers unique benefits, allowing children to choose the option that best fits their lifestyle and orthodontic needs.

It’s natural to want to keep the beautiful smile you’ve worked so hard to achieve after months or years of orthodontic treatment. The process of ensuring that your teeth remain in their new position after your braces or aligners are removed is known as orthodontic retention. In this blog post, we’ll look at how to keep the results of your orthodontic treatment and avoid relapse.

Why is Orthodontic Retention Important?

Braces or aligners are used to gently move your teeth into the correct position during orthodontic treatment. When your braces or aligners are removed, your teeth will want to gradually shift back to their original position. This is referred to as relapse, and it has the potential to undo all of the hard work that you and your orthodontist have put in during your treatment.

Orthodontic retention is essential for keeping your teeth in their new position and preventing relapse. You can maintain the results of your treatment and enjoy a beautiful smile for years to come by wearing your retainers as directed by your orthodontist.

Types of Orthodontic Retainers

Orthodontic retainers are classified into two types: removable and fixed. Removable retainers, which are typically made of clear plastic, are intended to be worn at night – every night immediately after braces are removed and about twice a week after a year following treatment. Fixed retainers are small wires that are permanently bonded to the back of your front teeth – these are not visible but think of them like a seat belt, keeping safe and in position the teeth that are front and centre, that you’ll want to ensure remain straight!

At Thorndon Orthodontics, we will provide a retention strategy that best suits based on the pre-treatment position of teeth and your oral hygiene and gum condition. Most patients have a combination of fixed and removable retention. Very clear instructions are provided at the time that braces/aligners are removed to ensure that your retainers are most effective. It is critical that you follow these instructions for wearing and caring for the retainers – if you ever need reminding, or any maintenance of the retainers, we are only a phone call away.

Tips on Caring For Your Orthodontic Retainer

Here are some tips for keeping your orthodontic retainers in good condition and preventing relapse:

Wear your removable retainer according to your orthodontist’s instructions: usually this means wearing them to sleep every night for six months following treatment, alternate nights for another six month then down to once or twice a week. Indefinitely. You read that right! We know that teeth want to crowd and bunch throughout life so wearing a night-time retainer once or twice a week is a small price to pay to ensure your pearly whites stay straight well into adulthood!

Clean your retainers on a regular basis. Fixed retainers need some TLC when cleaning. You will need to take care to floss between these teeth and ensure that you see a hygienist regularly if you are prone to tartar build up. Removable retainers should be cleaned on a regular basis with a soft-bristled toothbrush. If there’s some build up or an odour, retainer cleaning solutions or tablets are available.

Keep your retainer in a safe place. Removable retainers should be stored in a protective case when not in use to avoid damage or loss. You’d be surprised how many retainers we replace every year because the family pooch found them! Keep retainers in a closed container out of reach of family pets and young children.

We will monitor your retainers for two years after your orthodontic treatment. Beyond this, we are always available to provide any assistance with maintaining or replacing retainers, especially if we provided your orthodontic treatment! If you have issues with retainers, it is best to have these seen to as soon as possible by a registered specialist orthodontist before the teeth have a chance to move out of line.

At Thorndon Orthodontics, we digitally scan your teeth when treatment is complete. These scans are securely stored and we are able to remake your retainers in as little as 60 minutes without the need for gooey moulds.

In the unlikely event that a fixed retainer falls out or comes loose, contact us straight away! A retainer wire can often be reglued at minimal cost as long as the wire has not been tampered with or distorted.

Orthodontic retention is critical to maintaining the results of your orthodontic treatment and avoiding relapse. You can have a beautiful smile for years to come if you follow your orthodontist’s instructions for wearing and caring for your retainers.

Contact Thorndon Orthodontics today if you have any questions about orthodontic retention or need to schedule an appointment to have your retainer checked. Our skilled team is committed to assisting you in maintaining a beautiful, healthy smile.

Getting braces can be an exciting and nerve-racking experience for many teenagers. While orthodontic treatment can help correct dental issues and improve oral health, it can also present a number of social and emotional challenges that can complicate the process.

In this blog post, we’ll look at some of the most common problems that teenagers face when getting braces and offer solutions.

Appearance

While most patients appreciate that orthodontic treatment will get them to the smile they want, not everyone is thrilled about wearing braces. Teenagers often feel self-conscious about their appearance and braces are not incognito. While the vast majority of patients embrace their braces, the colour choices and the fact that they are temporary, others take longer to get used to the appearance of them. In extreme cases, patients may feel self-conscious showing their teeth when the talk or smile as they are worried of negative comments or judgement.

If you’re a teen dealing with this issue, remember that braces are only temporary! Eyes on the prize champ – those metal or ceramic clips are your ticket to a smile you’re going to love to show off in the years to come.

Teasing

Teenagers sometimes worry that braces will make them a target of teasing. The truth is that so many teenagers now get orthodontic treatment that you’re hardly likely to be the odd one out for wearing braces. If you do encounter teasing, don’t forget to stay positive and shrug off any bad vibes on your way to that shiny straight white smile!

Talk to your orthodontist!

Finally, whether you are self-conscious about your crooked teeth before starting treatment or at the prospect of having visible braces, make sure you express your concerns to your parents and orthodontist – in many instances, alternate treatment options such as ceramic braces or clear aligners may be available to ease your concerns – we’re here to listen and want to help!

Our experienced orthodontist and friendly team are committed to providing a safe, welcoming and fun environment for you during your orthodontic treatment – we love getting to know our patients and seeing them thrive during and following their orthodontic treatment.
